Great Italian Musical Treasures
SCHEDULE Thursday 28 June - Rome/ Perugia Join us at our welcome late morning reception followed by lunch at the magnificent Hotel Nazionale situated in the Piazza di Monte Citorio, close to the magnificent Palazzo Montecitorio, home to the Italian Chamber of Deputies. After lunch we travel the short drive by private coach to the hilltop Umbrian capital, Perugia for Angela Hewitt's renowned Trasimeno Festival, itself a highlight of the European Summer festival calendar. During our time in Perigua we will stay in the Hotel Locanda della Posta, conveniently located right in Perugia. Afternoon at leisure. In the early evening we will enjoy the delightful buffet and pre-festival concert at the hilltop town of San Savino. (L, D) Pre-tour days in Rome Our time on tour only allows a very brief stay in Rome which for many, is not sufficient time to explore this wonderful city. Please let us know if you would like us to arrange additional nights at the Hotel Nazionale on your behalf. We will also be available for guided tours by prior arrangement. Friday 29 June - Trasimeno Music Festival (Perugia) We will enjoy four full days at the Trasimeno Music Festival. Arrangements include festival performances each night in Perugia, Cortona and Magione, excursions to nearby regional towns accompanied by highly knowledgeable English speaking guides, as well as dinners including a gala festival dinner. All transports to festival concerts. Details will be available on publication of the Trasimeno Music Festival programme for 2018. Tuesday 3 July - Festival dei Due Mondi (Spoleto) This morning after breakfast we travel the short journey by private minibus to the regional town of Spoleto for our second European summer festivals delight. Italy's Festival dei Due Mondi, founded in 1958 by master composer Gian Carlo Menotti, is one of the oldest and most important festivals in Umbria. Depending on the final festival programme, we will spend two or three nights in Spoleto, staying in the delightful Hotel San Luca. The Roman town of Spoleto is located high atop a steep hill in the Umbrian hills, overlooking olive groves and vineyards. This ancient city is home to a number of important monuments, including a restored Roman theatre as well as its 12 century cathedral boasting a porticoed facade and inside, a series of frescoes painted by the Renaissance artist, Fra Fillipo Lippi. We have planned for two festival performances. However we cannot provide any further details until the festival programme is released, usually two to three months prior to the festival. Based on previous years' schedules however, you will not be disappointed in this beautiful and unique experience. Thursday 5 July - Rome Departing Spoleto after breakfast, we will take the short drive to Rome, staying two or three nights in the magnificent Hotel Nazionale. During our time in this wonderful city we will enjoy a visit to Rome's most significant sights, accompanied by our English speaking guide, for example, the Piazza di Spagna, Fontana di Trevi, Il Pantheon, Campo de'Fiori, Piazza Navona to name a few. We will arrange our evening meal in Rome's liveliest and interesting areas, such as the beautiful ancient Jewish Quarter established as a ghetto by Pope Paul IV in 1555 and rich in ancient Roman history, or the Trastevere district, also with its vibrant history and character, often referred to as the 'Village within the City'. Time permitting, we will also visit St Peter's Basilica and the ancient Castel Sant'Angelo, originally built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian (AD 130-139). These days Castel Sant'Angelo is also famed for the setting of the last act of Puccini's Tosca. Here one can admire the beautiful views across Rome over coffee or cocktails in one of its rampart terraces. We are also considering a day excursion to the magnificent Renaissance estate Villa d'Este and gardens and Hadrian's Villa, private summer retreat for the Emperor Hadrian. Our final itinerary for our time in Rome will be available once finalised festival programmes for 2018 are published. Rest assured however that your stay in Rome will be a full schedule of discovery and enjoyment. Villa d'Este, Tivoli A UNESCO World Heritage site, Villa d'Este is situated within mesmerising gardens of cypresses and fountains. Commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito Il d'Este (1509-1572), son of Alfonso I d'Este and Lucrezia Borgia, and grandson of her father, Pope Alexander VI, Villa d'Este is a masterpiece of Italian Renaissance architecture and garden design. Sunday 8 July - Ravello Festival, Amalfi Coast Ravello, our final destination, is perched high on a hilltop more than 1,200 feet above the Mediterranean overlooking Italy's spectacular Amalfi coast. Here we will stay at the charming Hotel Rufolo, boasting exquisite views across the beautiful Mediterranean as well as an easy short walk to the Ravello festival centre. Over the years the Hotel Rufolo has been home to many famous actors, authors, composers and artists who have visited Ravello for refuge and inspiration. As well as enjoying five days of the highly popular Ravello Festival, our stay at Italy's famed Amalfi coast will also include guided visits to the ancient cities of Naples, Pompei and Sorrento, as well as a full day excursion by private motor launch to the beautiful Isle of Capri. Friday 13 July - Final farewells Our tour arrangements conclude after breakfast on 12 July 2018. We will arrange for one transport to Rome's Fiumicino airport at a time best suited to all of our guests. Your travel agent will assist you with return or onward travel arrangements. |
